Open Source
Applied to software, the term Open Source is defined as 'free' access to the programs, including source code, and the ability to 'freely' redistribute copies of those programs. In this case 'free' does not necessarily mean without charge, rather it refers to freedom.These days when people refer to 'Open Source' they often mean Linux, although not all Open Source Software is Linux.
The Linux operating system began as a Unix lookalike which had the advantages of being reliable, 'free,' and low cost, with the ability to run on Intel processors. Servers based on Intel processors are inexpensive, making Linux an ideal replacement in the data centre not only for proprietary Unix systems based on expensive hardware, but also for Windows software with its more expensive and complex licensing model. These days Linux comes in many varieties, and often has its own desktop included, something that also makes Linux a serious contender in the business desktop market.
